N. Jayaraman joined as a faculty at the Department of Organic Chemistry, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, in December 1999, and is a Professor and Chairman currently. He completed early studies: B.Sc. (University of Madras), M.Sc. (Annamalai University) and doctoral research at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, under the supervision of Professor S. Ranganathan. He was a postdoctoral fellow under mentorship of Professor Sir James Fraser Stoddart, Nobel Laureate (Chemistry 2016), at the University of Birmingham, UK, and at the University of California Los Angeles, USA, between 1994 and 1999. His major areas of research advancements are in carbohydrate chemistry and dendrimer chemistry. He was honored with Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in 2009 and is a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences. He was the President of the International Carbohydrate Organization during 2014–2016.
